Joint mobilization can help to loosen the joint capsule in a certain direction to increase range of motion of a particular joint. The strong connective tissue around a joint can sometimes be limiting the movement. Joint mobilization is also a valuable way to break up any scar tissue that may have developed that can also be limiting motion of the joint. There are varying grades of joint mobilization. The majority of mobilizations performed by your physical therapist typically range from grade 1 to grade 4. A grade 5 joint mobilization may be necessary in some cases, this may be performed by your physical therapist or by your orthopedic doctor under anesthesia.
